Saturday's match at Easter Road left many Hibs fans including myself with a concoction of emotions, swinging wildly from excitement to sheer bewilderment as the game ended in a 3-3 draw. Witnessing such a game is a thrill for any neutral, but for us Hibs supporters, it was a frustrating showcase of the potential and pitfalls of our beloved team.
David Gray's decision to alter Hibernian's formation from the previously successful 3-5-2 to a 3-4-3 this season is proving to be more of a conundrum than a masterstroke. The midfield trio of Josh Mulligan, Dylan Levitt, and Jamie McGrath struggled to impose themselves throughout the match. The lack of control in the midfield was evident as we failed to sufficiently orchestrate plays through this key area, and defensively, the gaps allowed Dundee United to slice through with worrying ease.
The absence of Nectar Triantis, who provided essential support from midfield last term, was palpably felt. The Cadden brothers, too, have not quite hit their previous high standards, contributing to a performance that felt disjointed across all areas. The result is a team that is far from playing terribly, yet, glaringly not playing to its potential either.
On a brighter note, the unveiling of the anniversary kit was a spectacular moment for the club. The marketing team did a fantastic job with the launch, complemented by a magnificent tifo display in the stands. While the new kit garnered applause and admiration, the sentimental among us are eager to see the team don the classic green top with white sleeves once more.
As we look forward, it's imperative that Gray addresses these tactical and performance issues. The current system needs fine-tuning to ensure it maximizes the evident talent within the squad. The midfield, especially, requires immediate attention to restore balance and effectiveness.
The potential of this team is undeniable. With strategic adjustments and a refocus on playing strengths, I remain convinced that our march towards the top of the league and a long-awaited Scottish FA Cup triumph remains on track. Victory is in our veins, just as it was during those glorious runs in the past, and with some tweaks, we'll be singing Hibs' praises from the stands once again!
And finally, just for a chuckleHow many Hearts fans does it take to change a light bulb? None! They prefer to live in the dark about their chances against the mighty Hibs!
